Welcome to Room 14! This is the place where we will update you on what we accomplish during the week, upcoming dates, and announcements. When possible, we will link any online materials we use here as well, in hopes to start a discussion about school.
General Information:
ELA:
We worked on many get to know you activities this week while learning about our class theme, "moon shot thinking". First we made a poster about ourselves, and watched the video posted on a different page on this site. We also read some books. Each student created themselves into an astronaut and wrote about their moon shot ideas.
The class began a writing piece based on the book "I Took the Moon for a Walk"www.youtube.com/watch?v=Huo-DRbqRd0&t=6s . Each student wrote about what they would do if they took the moon for a walk. They had to include two places they love to go.
Other Books we Read (since the first day of school)
Math:
We set the students up on the supplemental math program, Zearn. This takes the child through skills needed, at their pace. The district gave us a new math book this year. We need to follow that scope and sequence, and give each child some Zearn time too. They will be able to go at a pace that is suitable for them. We have found great success with this. Zearn is always a good way to practice skills at home. If you need their log ins, please send a message and we will get them for you. Once they log into their google account, they should be already signed in.
We are in the process of making a "Math About You" banner. Each child has their own pennant for the banner. Hopefully they will be done early next week.
Our first unit for math will be place value.
General Information:
- Open House: Wednesday, September 18th at 6:30 PM
- PTO Meeting: Monday, September 9th at 7 PM in the library.
- Remind: There was a snag with the remind app. Some family members were added as students, not guardians. When that happens, we cannot send individual messages to you. Because we have the remind app on our phones, we are more accessible to you during the day. We try and check it before school, during lunch and specials, and after school hours. We had to drop some people from the class, then add them again because of their "student" not "parent" status. We are sorry for any inconvenience. You can text 81010 and message @gka69h . Messaging rates do apply, so if you would rather email us, let us know.
- Snack: We have snack every morning. Feel free to send your child in with an extra snack. We just ask that any peanut related food is saved for lunch in the cafeteria. We have extra snacks in the room if a child forgets theirs.
- Our class has recess and lunch alone on Fridays. We have a class incentive Monday-Thursday. If the class has a good itinerant class, they earn an "ice cream scoop" magnet. If on Thursday they have all four ice cream scoops, they get a sweet treat on Friday since they are together as a class, not a grade, that day. They earned their first treat today. We explained it may, or may not, be food each week. We also have a larger whole class incentive, fire flames, for our spaceship (hanging from the ceiling). They earn paper links (the flames) when they get compliments from other adults, or do something amazing as a whole class. Once they compete the required flame length, they earn a party. Our space ship can "blast off" with as many flame bursts as they earn.
- Google Classroom: many assignments will be put on our google classrooms. This week, we showed the class how and where to find the classrooms. We have two. One will house ELA and Social Studies assignments, and the other Math and Science. All students are signed in, but no work is posted since we are still setting up classroom culture and routines.
- Screening: Our district screening window opens up next week. We no longer will be using STAR. It is now iReady.
- Homework: We have had many questions about homework. We do not assign homework, but we will send home suggestions for you to talk about and practice. We will send a more in depth homework "policy" soon.
- We have not started any Science or Social Studies yet. We are trying to create a safe classroom culture, and set up routines and expectations.
