Our first full week went by quickly. We are still getting used to class routines, especially focused around academic assignments and procedures. Monday's time was spent introducing skills for the week. Your child should always have the spelling words written on the week we are in. Some weeks, they will get all of the reading skills we will be working on. As we have mentioned, we do not assign homework, but these are skills you can talk about when you are home (look for the spelling pattern in the book they are reading, talk about the comprehension skills, etc). You can also "read" for 20 minutes, by watching the read alouds we used in class.
General Announcements;
We focused on many ELA routines with the first Journeys story, "A Fine, Fine School" by Sharon Creech. We set up our agendas with the spelling words. We did not have a test on the words since we did not get to practicing the "CVC" rule with the words. Next week, they will have the opportunity to build their words in stations. We did work on a lot of vocabulary activities. We grouped the words into parts of speech: adverb, adjectives, nouns and verbs. After we read and listened to the story, we made a story structure flip book, and analyzed the characters' traits. We talked a lot about inferences and finding out what the author is trying to tell us. We revised and edited the "If I Took the Moon for a Walk" writing piece.
Books we read:
We began our place value unit. We will learn how to read and write numbers to the hundred thousands place. We made houses for the "families" of numbers. Those should be coming home in the mail. It is a good visual for finding the place values. The students learned to compose and decompose numbers, and we used the hundreds chart to help us round numbers to the nearest tens place. We posted some songs and videos in the google classroom for the students to watch. Feel free to have your child log you in to the classroom for all of the videos. I linked their two favorites to this update.

Science
We set up our science "investigation" journals, and brainstormed what makes a scientist by creating a chart and discussing it. We also spoke about expectations when we engage in experiments. This is the first kick off lesson for the Science program. Our first unit of study is water and climate.
General Announcements;
- Open House: Wednesday, September 18th at 6:30 PM.
- Please have your child show you how they log in to the google classroom. We have posted some songs and videos to help with learning place value.
- Book Fair: The book fair will be open the Tuesday before Open House. That is when we go as a class Monday we will send home a reminder. Do not worry if you forget, or would rather go to the fair with your child, because the book fair will be running during open house as well.
- The district is implementing a new screening tool. Previously, your children used STAR as a screening tool. Now, they will take an iReady assessment for both Reading and Math. We will begin this process next week. Please send in head phones if you have not yet. Headphones are required for this screening. We do have some extras, but not a whole class set.
- We are still completing our running records with the students, along with their sight word lists. We hope to be done with them by the end of next week.
