- We mailed out our Valentine's Day cards to Major White. He should get them well before Valentine's Day! The kids were so excited to write to him. The cards came out adorable.
- The hundredth day of school is Monday. This week, the kids created themselves, using scrapbook paper, at the age of 100. They filled out a Mad Libs type of poem to go with it. They are currently in the hallway for display. We will send them home soon.
- The class earned their "spaceship fire flame party". They earn flames when they get compliments from others in the building, and when they are spotted with incredible behavior as a class. We celebrated with some snacks, watching Stuart Little" and playing Kahoot.
We worked on our after reading comprehension skills for the Journeys story we started last week, "The Kamishibai Man". We drew out an updated model of the box carried on the story teller's bike. It was neat to see what the students thought should be included to help the story tellers out. We wrote a constructed response to help connect to the story. The students about a tradition in their family because the Kamishibai men created the story telling tradition in Japan. The students wrote another constructed response about how the Kamishibai man's life changed after the invention of the television. The students then read a short article about read Kamishibai men in Japan. It was a good way to compare and contrast non fiction and fiction writing.
For writing, we finished our "You 'donut' know how much I love you" constructed responses. We started writing another Valentine's themed constructed response about the sweetest thing someone has done for us. These pieces are helping write with a main idea and details. We also started our "What Great Writers Use" resource book. This will contain definitions and examples of different types of figurative language. This week we added hyperbole and alliteration into the book. We posted songs in the ELA google classroom to help the class remember these skills. Please head over to the classroom with your child and review these new concepts.

This is a quick unit on area. We are spending some time to review perimeter as well. There are a lot of online practice in the google math classroom. It is an easy unit if they are comfortable with their multiplication tables. It would be awesome if you practice these facts at home as well as in school. We try to stress the students they need to know them fluently before leaving grade three. We compare it to being able to recite the alphabet. We did not give another table to practice this week because we are still testing the 3's, 10's and 11's tables. We also worked on problem solving with arrays, multiplication and division. They were introduced to what a variable is. I related it to sixth grade math and they were very excited to learn something they will need later on.
Social Studies and Science
We worked on our background information for our next "motion and matter" experiment. This time they will build a whirly bird to help demonstrate gravity and weight. Our Social Studies was related to inventions this week. We listened to a story about inventors and we invented a new box for the Kamishibai man in the story.
