General Announcements
We read the Journeys story "Young Thomas Edison". The skills that went along with it were: the "aw" "o" "al" sounds, vocabulary, sequencing events in with a timeline, compare and contrast and author's purpose. Next week, we will expand our understanding of the story next week.
Other books we read:
This week was focused on twp step problem solving using the four operations. We practiced often. This is a tricky skill but an important one. We helped give tips to navigate solving them. We also reviewed the nines table, practicing online, coloring and worksheets. All of our resources are found in the google classroom. Feel free to go over some of the resources with your child for extra practice.
SS and Science
We combined SS with math this week. We read and learned about Peru, Machu Picchu and the Andes Mountains. We broke up an article to demonstrate how the author set up the article when writing. Next week, we will research the community of this part of Peru and answer some math questions too.
For Science, we completed another investigation on how the amount of magnets affect the pull on the magnetic field. We wrote a constructed response answering that focus question. We will have a "quiz" before moving on to the next investigation. You will find magnet related videos, games, and reading in the Math/ Science google classroom. The kids can use these sites during the day when they are done with work. Feel free to check it out with them.
- Thank you for all of the Valentine's Day treats today. The three of us appreciate everything. The class had a great time today.
- Ms. Kilday, a teacher in grade 2, presented her student with a wheelchair accessible van today. We had a whole school assembly to surprise the student and the family with the van. We made posters and celebrated as a school family. All of the children were truly excited and happy to participate in this kind deed. Ms. K and "Jake's Place" fund-raised for this back in September.
- Chocolate Bar Fundraiser: Another slip went home to give you the option to participate in the chocolate bar fundraiser. Please note the date change. If you want to participate, please get the slip back to school and I will get it into the PTO box.
- Hearts for Haiti: We purchased small hearts for each child in our room. They decorated and wrote their names on the hearts today. Ms. Amaral and Mrs. Desilus will hang them in the front lobby windows for the rest of the month. We are continuing to collect money for hearts until February 28th. This fundraiser helps Mrs. Desilus's education fund for children in Haiti. Larger hearts are $5 and small hearts are $1. Paper hearts will displayed in the front lobby.
- Jump Rope for Heart: We were able to participate in Jump Rope for Heart twice this week! Once in phys. ed. class, and once during health class. The class had a fun time.
- NO SCHOOL: Monday 2/17 - Wednesday 2/19. Please enjoy a few days off for February break.
